The Comedy Bureau

The Comedy Bureau is a centralized agency founded to share knowledge of "bureau-approved" comedy throughout the Greater Los Angeles area and spread joy in the form of live comedy to all citizens we can possibly reach. With that in mind, as you can imagine, we have no official government affiliation whatsoever. -Bureau Director Jake Kroeger

  • Morning Debriefing 9/19/11

    1) Our 2011 Emmys Summary: Modern Family is the Emmy’s favorite comedy, Louis C.K. didn’t win anything, The Big Bang Theory did win something, Outstanding Guest Actor in A Comedy Series is an award, despite moving to TBS, Conan loses out to NBC again, and we still think awards shows shouldn’t be televised.

    2) Kumail Nanjiani, Gears of War 3, Barbara Kingsolver, and a “Make A Wish” Kid can only make for a hilarious Funny or Die sketch.

    3) Patton Oswalt’s Finest Hour is available for purchase or download tomorrow!

    4) The Midnight Show debunks the myths of twins in ads.

    5) Who wants to fund an animated horror short starring Paul F. Tompkins?

    6) Louis C.K. is in the A.V. Club again today in what inevitably be quoted on Tumblr then reblogged throughout the entire blogosphere including right here, which doesn’t bother us in the slightest

    7) Oh we forgot regarding the 2011 Emmy Awards: Jimmy Fallon’s angry clap deserves its own statue. Forget an emmy; it needs a life size one.

    1) Aubrey Plaza is “one of the most fascinating people” that Conan’s talked to into awhile.

    2) Don Rickles on Jimmy Kimmel Live (including Parts 1 & 2).

    3) Over the last few months, there has been a lot of talk about the consequences of talking about sexual assault and rape on stage and being aware of the sensitivity of audience members. Today, Barbara Holm gives an interesting flip on the debate in regards to hecklers sexually harassing comedians at Laughspin.

    4) A guy sells punny-one liners in a park. There was a guy in Venice who just used to take donations and would make a living performing his act on the street. Is America prime for “street comedy”?

    5) Laughter Against the Machine, a comedy tour bringing laughs to political hot spots around the U.S., is only a few days away from needing to meet their donation goal. If that wasn’t enough, hear what Marc Maron had to say about it.

  • Morning Debriefing 9/3/11

    1) Whatever you think of Katt Williams and his comedy, he deserves a round of applause for standing by his material and what he said on stage in this interview on CNN. [via Laughspin]

    2) Patton Oswalt’s Finest Hour is upon us next week (as long as you get Showtime).

    3) National Sketch Writing Month is a real thing that’s happening RIGHT NOW. [Via Splitsider]

    5) Wisepix’s The Ultimate Free & Cheap LA Comedy List for 9/4-9/10.

    6) Though we’re sure you’ve probably seen this on much more high profile sites then ours, HDNet picked up Goodnight Burbank and David Cross will have an recurring role on Modern Family.

    7) As the Joan Rivers episode of Louie expired on Hulu, I edited and expanded The Comedian’s Guide to Feeling Better About Making It In Comedy and posted it on Laughspin. Read both and you probably won’t care about one which one makes you feel better (even if you don’t do comedy).

    8) ON THE HORIZON
Weird Al Yankovic @ City National Grove of Anaheim Fri. Nov. 11th 8PM $40/$65

    8) An article we wrote for the Nerdist on how SEO has possibly ruined comedy is according to “Matt” is “…a boring, pointless, empty article,” further adding, “Nothing worse than a comedy critic. Get a job.” Apparently, he liked the Les Misérables parody of Jay-Z’s & Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind”. To each his own.

    9) Fuck yeah Down’s Syndrome Association of the UK, you bet Doug Stanhope isn’t going to apologize for his rant against Sarah Palin and her DS baby (another piece we wrote yesterday for Laughspin).

    10) Aziz Ansari on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

  • Now That’s a ‘Change-Up’: Todd Glass Sits at Kimmel’s Desk

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Todd Glass stops in the middle of his set and literally, without the aid of some little known spell or some frustrated writers’ imagination, switches places with Jimmy Kimmel.

It’s a weird, though refreshing, move on his part, as Glass had the audience going on the last joke that he told while on stage.

Watch it in Parts 1 and 2. Then go check out Todd Glass record his first hour long special at the El Rey Theatre this Saturday.

(This was meant to go in the Morning Debriefing, but due to a lack of caffeine and a subsequent lack of awareness, the video is now its own post. Talk about being meta, am I right? Also, yes, you can hate us for the pun in the headline.)

  • Morning Debriefing 4/7/11

    1) Rolling Stone’s got a pretty good podcast list.  With The Pod F. Tompkast, WTF! w/Marc Maron, The Nerdist, The Smartest Man in the World w/Greg Proops, Comedy Death Ray Radio, and more that we all should probably listen to, Rolling Stone almost makes up for the garbage “Top 100 Guitarists of All Time” list they put out every year.

    2) Jay Larson’s CD taping is TONIGHT at 8PM and you can still bypass the general cover fee with promo code: LARSON.  Along with performances from Pete Holmes, Melissa Villasenor, and Al Jackson, don’t miss a chance to laugh until your head will almost fall off and a chance for your laugh to be recorded forever.

    3) Besides already knowing who won the upcoming Comedy Awards airing Sun. Apr. 10th, find out more with interviews from Tony Sam and Kate Riley at HahaJK.com-Red Carpet-Chloe Moretz-sketch duo briTANick.

    4) Last night was a good night Late Night TV: Norm MacDonald on Kimmel Part 1-Part 2 & Don Rickles on Letterman & Marc Maron on Ferguson.

    5) Tonight’s COMEDY CRAWL
LA Comedy Shorts Festival @ Downtown Independent Theater 7PM
    Comedy Speakeasy @ TSR Lounge
    8PM FREE
All Star Comedy @ Hollywood Laugh Factory 8PM $20/$30 VIP/2 item min.

The Josh & Josh Show @ Bar Lubistch 8:30PM FREE
Mustaches & Mai Tais @ The Palace Restaurant 9PM $5
How to Live with Chelsea Peretti @ UCB Theatre 9:30PM $5
Live! at Carnegie Hall* @ Hollywood Hotel 10:30PM FREE

    6) OPEN MIC RUN
HOLLYWOOD HOTEL 1160 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA/Starts 7PM
THE SANDWICH SPOT 3101 Ocean Park Ave., Santa Monica, CA/Starts 7PM
    CAFE ON 2ND 7 S. 2nd St., Alhambra, CA/Sign-up 7PM/Starts 7:30PM/10 min. guaranteed
    TKO SHOW @ 212 CAFE 212 Pier Ave., Santa Monica, CA/Starts 9PM

    7) Just a note about developing material: wondering about existence and purpose isn’t funny right off the bat.  Just an FYI.  Sidenote: I’m doing OK, I think.
