Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA (walk up Martel past Big Mama’s and Papa’s)/5PM to 11PM/$5/multiple sets allowed/bottled water and coffee available9) It has come to the attention of the Comedy Bureau that two videos in particular on Osama Bin Laden’s death featuring the amazing Table of Galaxies (the hilarious duo of James Adomian and Whitest Kids U Know’s Trevor Moore) and Hasan Minhaj didn’t get nearly enough press (even though they’ve already been posted here) due to the political nature of the humor in them. Interestingly enough, we have not vilified Bin Laden the same way we have Adolf Hitler. Hitler is one of the “go to” references for evil incarnate and Bin Laden is far from that. It’s not like when Indiana Jones met Hitler when there was no doubt that Indy is looking into the face of evil. The annoucement of Osama Bin Laden’s death in the social networking age where “no stone goes unturned” and subsequently made fun of brought about jokes about the death of Osama Bin Laden explore the mythos behind Osama Bin Laden, even questioning whether he really died or not. Watch the two videos below and think about it.

Katie Crown-Tip of the Hat-6/4

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to KATIE CROWN.
Not to be presumptuous, but it’s almost near impossible to not laugh, smile, and end up adoring Katie Crown if you catch her performing. Instantly likeable from her first laugh at herself when she takes the stage, Crown is an original and endearing type of hilarious that’s so rare and refreshing to see, especially amongst a predominating trend of comedy that’s dark, personal, and/or visceral.
Katie owns up to her “prankster” label, though she makes sure her performances are absolutely all in good spirits. She doesn’t go out into the audience, pick on people in the front row, but does take everyone on a wonderfully absurd ride through her observations of a world that she’s made up. Her bits touch upon such things like Scooby Doo in OB/GYN check ups and imagining that people are singing in conversation like a real life musical. Yes, there is plenty of goofy singing in Katie’s act, but it’s all mixed together in such a way that’s hysterical with no regard to age.
Having earned some comedy stripes from appearing at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and opening for the likes of Zach Galifianakis, Paul F. Tompkins, and Neil Hamburger, Crown has made her way to Los Angeles, delighting people one room at a time. I caught her at the always superb Josh & Josh Show wandering through her delightfully bizarre material. Throughout her set, as mentioned before, Katie has such an immediate affinity with the crowd that she could be silly as she wanted and the crowd literally loved it.
I remember one guy (and though everything written her might suggest otherwise, it’s not me) wandering around after the show looking for Crown so he could say that he had fell in love with her.
If you’ve never seen Katie Crown before on account of her only recently transplanting to Los Angeles from Canada, please check her calendar frequently at KatieCrown.com. In fact, you can start to tomorrow night at Powerviolence at the Complex in Hollywood 8:30PM for completely free.
